This maintenance release addresses about 50 minor issues. The testing many of you contributed prior to the release of 3.0 helped make it one of the best and most stable releases we’ve had.

Download 3.0.1 or update automatically from the Dashboard > Updates menu in your site’s admin area.

The new release contains many fantastic features, including:

• a new default theme (Twenty Ten)
• powerful menu management
• custom post types and taxonomies
• a bulk upgrader for plugins
• multi-site capabilities

The upgrade is quick and painless.  Here is a quick video demonstrating how to upgrade 2.9.2 to WordPress 3.0:

LIT will offer online and classroom based WordPress training in the Vancouver area, with the first classroom based classed running in September.

Thomas Mackenzie alerted us to a problem where logged in users can peek at trashed posts belonging to other authors. If you have untrusted users signed up on your blog and sensitive posts in the trash, you should upgrade to 2.9.2.  As always, you can visit the Tools->Upgrade menu to upgrade.

Here are 3 quick videos demonstrating some of the key new features:

1. ”Trash” feature:  If you accidentally delete a post or comment, you can bring it back from the Trash.  This also eliminates those annoying “are you sure” messages WordPress used to have on every delete.  Here’s a demo:

2. Built-in image editor: You can now crop, edit, rotate, flip, and scale your images, all from the comfort of your WordPress dashboard.  A very time-saving feature.  Check it out:

3. Batch plugin update: Another feature that can save you a lot of time and clicks.  You can update 10 plugins at once, versus having to do multiple clicks for each one.   This feature also uses the new compatibility data from the official WordPress plugins directory to give information about whether plugins are compatible with new releases of WordPress.  Demo:

There are many other “under the hood” features of WordPress 2.9, which you can use to enhance your theme, and to provide new functions such as “Post Thumbnails”, something we will cover in a future post.

Head on over and download WordPress 2.9.1, or hit update from the Tools -> Upgrade menu in WordPress Admin.

As you know over the past couple of months we have been working on the new features for WordPress 2.9. We have also been working on trying to make WordPress as secure as possible and during this process we have identified a number of security hardening changes that we thought were worth back-porting to the 2.8 branch so as to get these improvements out there and make all your sites as secure as possible.

The headline changes in this release are:

• A fix for the Trackback Denial-of-Service attack that is currently being seen.
• Removal of areas within the code where php code in variables was evaluated.
• Switched the file upload functionality to be whitelisted for all users including Admins.
• Retiring of the two importers of Tag data from old plugins.

We recommend that you upgrade your site to this new version of WordPress to ensure that you have the best available security protection.
