Using WordPress Custom Fields for Fun and Profit: WordCamp Fraser Valley 2009

Posted on August 22nd, 2009 by Dave in Blog, Wordpress

WordPress custom fields are a fantastic feature of WordPress, which allow you to use WordPress as a general Content Management System (CMS) for your blog or WordPress powered site.

Custom fields are little “bits” of information which you can store alongside a WordPress post, or page. A custom field has two components:

  • A key/value “pair”
    • Key is the name of the meta data element  (eg. image)
    • Value is the information itself  (eg. “myphoto.jpg”)

In my recent talk at WordCamp Fraser Valley 2009, I give an overview of using Custom Fields, in my presentation titled “Using Custom Fields for Fun and Profit”.  Here are the slides used in the demo:

Thanks for sharing the slides Dave. Lots of people commented on your presentation later in the day. I’m sorry I missed it. Lots of great information.

Hi Dave, Great talk and nice to have the slides and the code to try and use this feature for my organization’s website re-do in WP.

Can you tell me by looking at this page, http://www.iassistdata.org/publications/iq/index.html

if i can handle the display of our quarterly using custom fields? i think to keep the page manageable i may have to restrict each page to four issues…
